Sometimes the best ideas start with a simple question.
For me, that question was: how can I help people feel more connected to our community?
Last year, that question led me to create the Audley Parish Newsletter, a publication designed to keep local residents informed about the people, projects and issues shaping our area. What began as a small idea quickly grew into something much bigger. Since launching the newsletter, I have had the opportunity to work with councillors, community groups, local organisations and even Members of Parliament, all with the shared goal of helping residents stay informed and engaged with local life.
As a 15 year old GCSE student, journalism is not the most conventional hobby. However, I have always been fascinated by the stories that shape our communities, particularly those involving local politics, civic life and the decisions that affect our everyday lives. Through the Audley Parish Newsletter, I have seen first-hand just how much people care about what happens in their villages, towns and cities, and how important it is for information to be accessible, relevant and rooted in the community it serves.
That is one of the reasons I am so excited to be joining The Staffordshire Signal as a writer, focussing on Politics and Regeneration.
From the moment I discovered The Signal, I was struck by its commitment to telling the stories that matter to local people. At a time when much of the media can feel distant, rushed or focused on national headlines, The Signal is helping to shine a light on the people, places and issues that make Staffordshire unique.
As a lifelong Stokie, I am incredibly proud of where I come from. Staffordshire is full of history, character, resilience and potential. Yet too often, the positive stories, ambitious projects and passionate people working to improve our communities do not receive the attention they deserve. Local journalism has an important role to play in changing that.
Over the coming months, I will be covering politics, regeneration and local democracy for The Staffordshire Signal with passion. I want to help explain how decisions are made, hold those in positions of responsibility to account and, most importantly, ensure local people remain at the heart of the conversation. Whether that means observing council meetings, visiting regeneration projects, interviewing political leaders or speaking directly to residents, my aim is always the same: to produce fair, balanced and accessible journalism that informs and engages.
I am incredibly grateful to Jenna and the team at The Staffordshire Signal for welcoming me on board, and I am looking forward to sharing stories from across Staffordshire in the months ahead.
This is an exciting time for local journalism, and I am proud to be part of it.
