The Staffordshire Signal is committed to accurate, fair reporting, and we take that responsibility seriously. As a publisher regulated by IMPRESS, we agree to correct any significant inaccuracy with due prominence, normally equal to the prominence given to the original error, at the earliest opportunity.
This page exists so that our approach to corrections is transparent, whether we've had cause to use it or not.
Corrections and clarifications, what's the difference
A correction is issued when something we published was factually wrong. It sets out what the error was, when it appeared, and what the correct position is.
A clarification is issued when new information comes to light that changes the facts or context of a story, even where nothing in the original piece was inaccurate at the time of publication.
How we handle them
Where an error is identified, whether raised by a reader, a subject of the story, or found through our own checks, we will:
- Investigate promptly
- Correct the article itself, with a clear note attached to the piece explaining what was changed and why
- Log the correction or clarification on this page, dated and described
- Give the correction prominence that reflects the seriousness and reach of the original error
