Music At The Mill to mark centenary of historic Garretaw carnival

Cheddleton Flint Mill Industrial Heritage Trust is set to host Flint Garretaw: Music At The Mill, a festival fundraiser marking 100 years since the Garretaw carnival took place on the Caldon Canal in 1925.

The event will take place on Saturday 28 June 2025, with gates opening at 12 noon. Music will begin at 2pm and continue until 9.30pm.

The festival village will be set up on the Flint Mill car park, between the river and the canal, with a specially built stage using the historic Mill as a uniquely lit backdrop. Visitors can enjoy an afternoon and evening of live music, food, drink and family activities, with both of the Mill’s water wheels turning throughout the day.

Bands announced so far include The Longshore Drifters, Slimline Shufflers, Lil' Jim, Unlucky Strike, Eva Väljaots and Robbie Sherratt, Heidi Browne Duo and The Centaurs. A varied playlist will also run between live sets to keep the atmosphere flowing throughout the day.

The festival village will include a bar and barbecue, supported by a dedicated chiller trailer. A Challenge 25 policy will be in place, with identification required for age restricted sales.

Great British Menu chef and owner of the neighbouring The Flintlock Restaurant, Thom Bateman, will be hosting the Great Garretaw Picnic stall, offering a selection of artisan goodies.

Tea, coffee and cakes will be available from the nearby moored Beatrice charity narrowboat, while The Oatcake Boat will be on hand for early arrivals looking for a mid morning bite or a Sunday morning pick me up. The Ice Cream Lady will also be bringing her van to the site for afternoon treats.

Families will be well catered for, with Moorlands Game Hire providing children’s activities on the lawn. Children under five can attend for free.

Visitors will be issued with a wristband on arrival, allowing them to explore the surrounding area and return to the festival site during the day.

Portaloos will be available on site, with an accessible toilet located at the Miller’s Cottage.

Three car parks have been earmarked for festival use within walking distance of the Flint Mill. These are Batemans, opposite the Mill and accessed via the canal tunnel, Cheddleton Community Centre on Hollow Lane, and Ashcombe Centre at St Edwards Park.

Visitors are asked not to park at The Flintlock Restaurant car park, The Red Lion car park or outside The Black Lion on Hollow Lane.

No outside food or drink will be permitted unless purchased from one of the festival partners, including Beatrice, The Oatcake Boat and The Ice Cream Lady.

All proceeds from the event will go to Cheddleton Flint Mill Industrial Heritage Trust, registered charity number 254196.
