Take the pressure off your road trips this summer - Staffordshire drivers warned about hidden heatwave tyre risk

Thousands of families across the county are expected to hit the roads over the coming weeks for staycations, seaside breaks, airport runs and visits to family and friends, with many travelling on motorways.

Cars will be packed with children, luggage, bikes, camping gear and everything else needed for a summer getaway, but many motorists remain unaware that warmer temperatures and heavier loads can significantly affect tyre performance.

As temperatures rise, the air inside tyres expands, increasing tyre pressure. Combined with long motorway journeys and fully laden vehicles, incorrectly inflated tyres can reduce grip, increase tyre wear and affect braking performance, potentially putting drivers, their passengers and other road users at greater risk.

Joe Brammer, Technical Manager at North Staffordshire-based Michelin UK, said:

“Many drivers don't realise that tyres are affected by both temperature and the extra weight that comes with summer holidays.

“A vehicle carrying a full family and luggage places much greater demands on its tyres, particularly during long motorway journeys in hot weather.

“Spending just a few minutes checking tyre pressures and the condition of your tyres before setting off can make a real difference to safety, tyre life and fuel efficiency.”

Tyre-related problems remain one of the leading causes of motorway breakdowns, yet a simple tyre check before travelling could help prevent unnecessary delays, costly repairs and dangerous incidents.

As part of its summer safety advice Michelin is encouraging drivers to: -
* Check tyre pressures before every long journey and adjust them to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended settings for the load being carried.

* Always check tyre pressures when the tyres are cold.

*Inspect tyres for cuts, bulges, uneven wear or objects lodged in the tread.

* Check tread depth, ensuring it is above the legal minimum of 1.6mm, as good tread is vital for maintaining grip during heavy summer downpours.

*Avoid leaving vehicles parked in direct sunlight for extended periods where possible.

Whether travelling far for a family holiday or simply heading out for a weekend away, a five minute tyre check before leaving home could help keep your journey on track.

While many people remember sunscreen, sunglasses and snacks before setting off on holiday, tyres are often overlooked despite being the only part of the vehicle in contact with the road.

Adding tyres to your holiday checklist is a simple step that could help keep your family safe, avoid an unexpected breakdown and ensure the only thing heating up is the weather.
