Students gain hands-on trade experience through city council work placements

The placements give students in years 10 and 11 practical skills, insight into trade careers and the opportunity to plan their next steps after GCSEs.

During the placements, students shadow skilled tradespeople, observing day-to-day tasks such as plumbing repairs, testing gas boilers and maintaining pipework. Towards the end of the placement, students carry out supervised activities themselves, gaining hands-on experience.

“It was great to mentor Jayden, he was enthusiastic and keen to learn my role and the work we do here.”

Rachel Forster, Social Responsibility Co-ordinator at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said:

“As part of the city council, we are committed to offer these placements. Students can gain a full understanding of the role and it helps them to decide whether they would like to pursue this as a career when they leave school.”

Councillor Chris Robinson, cabinet member for housing, planning, improvement and governance at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said:

“Our Repairs and Maintenance Service works closely with schools across the city to give students an insight into life as a trade professional.

“We’re proud to offer these placements, giving students a real understanding of what it’s like to work in the trades, helping them decide if it’s the right career for them.

“Placements like these give young people the skills, confidence and experience to shape their futures.”
