Stoke-on-Trent City Council says the fitting may have been affected by the recent extreme fluctuations in temperature. Following the incident, the site was immediately inspected and a decision was taken to close the station while checks and repairs are carried out.
Work has been taking place throughout yesterday, overnight and today to ensure all light fittings are safe before the station reopens. The council is aiming to reopen the bus station over the weekend.
Passengers can still travel as normal, with bus services continuing to operate from temporary stops nearby. The newsagent located inside the bus station also remains closed while the work is completed.
A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said:
"We acted quickly to assess the site as soon as the problem emerged.
"As always, public safety is our number one priority and we have closed the station in order for necessary work to be carried out as quickly as possible.
"We apologise for any inconvenience."
