From 200 metres to the Potters ’Arf: North Staffordshire lung patients take on the challenge

Before she found her local support group, Sue, who lives with a serious lung condition, struggled to walk just 200 metres.

Even 12 months ago, she couldn't manage a complete walk around Trentham Lake. She would get about a quarter of the way, stop and rest, and then have to turn back.

But this Sunday she will pull on her Asthma + Lung UK T-shirt and take on the first section of the Potters ’Arf as part of Team Breathe Easy.

“In 12 months, BENS has changed my life – from 200 metres to more than three miles!” said Sue.

After finding Breathe Easy North Staffordshire, Sue was encouraged to try pulmonary rehabilitation and joined BENS X – Exercise for Lung Health, the group's regular community exercise programme. She now exercises every week and regularly walks around Trentham Lake.

“The classes are extremely motivating,”

she said.

“Seeing people exercising every week, even with their oxygen, really spurs me on. I feel guilty if I miss a week!

“For the Potters ’Arf, I want my medal! It's a challenge, but I want the personal satisfaction of achieving it – and it should be fun.”

Fellow BENS X member Dave, who lives with a different lung condition, is also returning after completing one section of the walking relay last year.

This year he's doubling his challenge – two sections, including the infamous Heartbreak Hill.

“The atmosphere is really great and the crowds are so supportive,”

said Dave.

“Last year I did one section, so I'm looking forward to achieving double that this year – especially as it includes Heartbreak Hill. That'll be a proud achievement!”

Breathe Easy North Staffordshire Chair Victor Cholij said:

“Sue and Dave show what people with lung conditions can still achieve with the right support, exercise and encouragement.

“We're not competing with the runners. We're setting our own challenges and showing that having a lung condition doesn't mean giving up on being active.”

Members of Breathe Easy North Staffordshire will be joined by friends and family in Team Breathe Easy, raising money and awareness for Asthma + Lung UK.

Last year's Potters ’Arf effort raised around £4,800 for the charity.

Dave said:

“Everyone knows somebody with a lung condition, yet poor lungs seem to be a forgotten illness. We need more research.”
