What’s new: Staffordshire County Council repaired 5,067 potholes during September, its highest monthly total on record.
By the numbers: A total of 27,442 potholes have been repaired since the beginning of April, with the council working towards 40,000 repairs by the end of March 2027.
The big picture: An additional £15 million over two years has been committed to tackling lower level potholes, alongside 14 additional highways crews and increased use of different repair methods.
Staffordshire County Council has recorded its busiest month for pothole repairs, with 5,067 defects repaired across the county during September.
It is the first time the number of potholes repaired in Staffordshire has passed 5,000 in a single month.
The latest figures take the total number of potholes repaired since the beginning of April to 27,442.
By the end of August, highways teams had completed 22,375 repairs, with September's additional 5,067 pushing the total closer to the council's target of repairing 40,000 potholes by the end of March 2027.
£15 million committed to tackling potholes
Staffordshire County Council has committed an additional £15 million over two years specifically to tackling a backlog of lower level potholes.
The work has also involved the deployment of 14 additional highways crews and increased use of different repair methods, including screeding and velocity patching.
The programme forms part of Staffordshire's Roadmap to a Better Network, which was launched in October 2025.
The approach focuses on increasing the number of repairs being completed, improving efficiency, introducing new technology and working practices, and seeking more sustainable highways funding from government.
Cllr Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“The repair of over 5,000 potholes in September is yet more proof that our strategy is delivering. From day one of a Reform administration, we set out that we would lobby hard for the improved and sustainable funding that Staffordshire deserves, but also that we would work tirelessly to use whatever we have available better and deliver more for the residents of Staffordshire.
“Our Roadmap to Better Network set out how we would go about this. More repairs through improved efficiency and innovative working was the direction, and since going live in April, it has delivered month on month, with yet another record month being achieved.
“Still plenty more to do, but we are consistently demonstrating that we can be trusted to do what we say and that we deliver.
“Less talk, more tarmac.”
September's figure is the latest in a series of high monthly repair totals as work continues across Staffordshire's road network.
The county council says a combination of additional crews, good weather and the use of different repair methods helped highways teams complete more work during September.
With 27,442 repairs completed since April, attention now turns to the remaining months of the programme and the council's target of reaching 40,000 pothole repairs by the end of March 2027.
