The Ballad of Maria Marten Comes to Crown Wharf Theatre

While the historic case triggered a nationwide manhunt and has been a staple of British true crime folklore for two centuries, Flintoff's script shifts the focus away from the gruesome sensationalism of the murder. Instead, it places Maria Marten at the heart of her own story, celebrating her life, friendships, and agency before her tragic death.

> "The murder of Maria Marten is a story that has been told and retold with much lip-smacking enthusiasm for the gruesome details," says playwright Beth Flintoff. "Here is the reversal of that telling. It's the story of Maria's murder, but it's an 'un-murdering.' It's a play about the people that experience violence; it's a play about love."

Directed by Kath Stanway, the production features an ensemble of six women who utilize music, movement, and vivid storytelling to bring the narrative to life. Stanway emphasizes the importance of reclaiming Marten's voice in this modern context.

> "Beth Flintoff’s brilliant play asks us to look again, beyond the murder mystery, and see Maria as a young woman with hopes and a life of her own," says Stanway. "The rehearsal process has already produced incredible goosebump moments. It’s a production full of heart and joy, despite its intensity, and we are eager to share it with the Stone community."

Performances will take place nightly at 7:30pm. Tickets are available for £16 (Adults) and £14 (Concessions) through the Crown Wharf Theatre box office at [www.crownwharftheatre.org.uk](http://www.crownwharftheatre.org.uk/?ref=thestaffordshiresignal.co.uk).

The production is recommended for audiences aged 14 and above.
